Last night, while I was watching the Grammys and absorbing all its platitudes about music bringing people together (cue the Israeli and Palestinian quartet), I started to get this feeling I haven’t had a lot of experience with lately, something along the lines of: Maybe not everything is terrible. Is there a word to describe that feeling? It’s not hope—it’s way too soon in the planet’s trajectory for hope. It’s not pleasure. But it’s something. Which got me thinking about how music has often given me this feeling over the years, and sometimes not so much music as performance. So I thought I’d share some recent go-to videos that tend to counterbalance my sense of horror, despair, anguish, you name it at what has become of us all.
These aren’t my favorite songs by any stretch or even my favorite performances. But something about them I find just moving enough to do the job.
If you want to share with me your recent go-tos in the comments, I won’t say no.
As of last night:
Enjoy your Monday, folks! And thanks for sticking with me.
